History - The PokerNews Cup

The story of the inaugural PokerNews Cup has its origins in Melbourne, Australia when the flagship event premiered at the prestigious Crown Casino on October 21, 2007. With six events spread across the nine day tournament, The PokerNews Cup Australia - as it was aptly named - welcomed over 1500 participants from 22 different countries across the world including some notable local and international poker figures. Some highlights included the PokerNews Australian Bad Boys of Poker $10,000 Invitational which saw ten of the local poker ‘bad boys’ engage in some wild trash talking and an evening of first-class poker. Participants included 2007 bracelet winner, Jeff Lissandro, 2006 bracelet winner, Mark Vos and PokerNews Ltd Chairman and world renowned bad boy, Tony G.

However, it was local up and coming player, Dory Zayneh that became the overall star of the tournament, taking home the title and a $300,000 first prize in the $3,000 PokerNews Cup Australia Main Event. In total, this inaugural event saw PokerNews award over $1.5 Million in prizes to lucky winners who went home with a lot more cash in their pockets and an experience they will surely not forget!

Following the success of the first PokerNews Cup, the team decided to bring this coveted series to Europe – launching the first PokerNews Cup on European shores at the 2008 PokerNews Cup in Salzburg, Austria. Running from April 23-27, the event had a European focus drawing participants from across the continent over the course of the five day tournament. Participants and their guests had the privilege of taking in the dramatic alpine backdrop of scenic Salzburg whilst indulging in some fine poker with other local and international poker personalities.

The Cup returned to its roots in Melbourne, Australia from October 12-21 and proved to be even bigger and better than the last. Some notable attendees included 2005 WSOP Main Event Champion, Joe Hachem, authour of the bestselling "Kill Phil" poker strategy series, Lee Nelson, and of course, Tony G. Ending on a high, the Team is now hard at work on our next PokerNews Cup.

Where to, you say? We head back to beautiful Europe where - in a world first - we will see the PokerNews Cup Alpine Champion crowned in an exclusive and luxurious ski resort overlooking most of Central Europe.
